1Texas TechL 2-1062006
Lubbock, TX- There are the games that make you shake your head. There is Ladanian Tomlinson's 406 yard rushing game in 2000. There is USC's dominance of an obviously overmatched and unprepared Oklahoma team in the national championship game. Then there is Texas Tech's 106-2 obliteration of UNC Charlotte.

Yes, you did read that last statement right. The UNCC Forty Niners lost to Tech 106-2. All that they could manage was a measly safety. People started to leave at the end of the first quarter, with the score 56-0. It got out of hand early and quick. Cam Nelson of UNCC threw three passes on the first 3 possessions, and all of them were INT's.

Combining the stats of all of the passes thrown by the Forty Niners, they were intercepted an NCAA-record 11 times by the Red Raiders. Not to mention the scoring record that they set with their 106 points. It was a dismal showing in the first ever 1-A football game, heck, the first ever football game, in UNC Charlotte's history.

But the last quarter showed some promise. Maybe
it was skill. Maybe it was luck. Maybe it was facing a third string defense. Maybe they were all there. Robert Thompson began to get the rushing attack together, and Jon Wise, the 3rd stringer, brought in after Nelson's disaster and an injury to the backup Nick Robinson, began to complete some passes. Although it didn't result in any points, we have to look for positives.

We caught up with Coach Tom Knotts of UNCC after the game, "That was the biggest ****ing exuse for a football game I've have ever seen. I don't give a **** what the university says about this statement, we ****ing disgraced this school today." Needless to say, an hour later, he was at a microphone stand reading a pre-written statement by the University.

Next week, the Forty Niner's travel to North Texas in hopes of pulling the upset. May god be with us, as even with him we'd be lucky to score two touchdowns.

2Mean GreenL 14-912006
Denton, TX- For the second straight game, the UNC Charlotte Forty Niners football team was to play under the red-hot Texas sun, this time against the North Texas Eagles. But under this bright, hot, intense sun, a star was born for the forty niners.

After having a rough first game, Jason Slaughter was in a depressed mood. When we caught up with him earlier in the week, he appeared gloomy and uninterested. That all changed come gametime. Coach Tommy Knotts put his spread passing offense to work, as he "dink-and-dunked" his way down the field, to the first two touchdowns in school history.

Jason Slaughter had the game of a lifetime. He started off hot, and was going over the middle often early in the game. He paid the price though, as he had to leave the game in the second quarter due to a hip injury. When he returned, he was unstoppable. Niner Quarterback Cam Nelson just kept throwing it to Slaughter on nearly every down. It was an amazing sight to see these two kids hook up that many times in a game.

Slaughter finished the game just shy of an NCAA record, as he had 21 receptions by the end of the game. As it turned out, Cam Nelson was given the green light to throw as many times as he wanted to, and he did. The Forty Niners showed a confidence in him that was missing last week, as Nelson completed 38 of his 67 passes for the first ever 300 yard passing game by a Niner.

No, you didn't misread that last sentence, it really happened. But the defense, my oh my. They couldn't stop anybody. Time and time again we saw Jamario Thomas, and even his backup, and his backup's backup, take it in for scores. North Texas finished the game with over 450 rushing yards, and 9 rushing touchdowns.

But the offense looked fantastic compared to weeks before. We again caught up with a more Coach Knotts after the game, and he was more stable than after last week's debacle.

"I tell you, I am so proud of Cam and Jason. They played their butts off out there today and it showed. Jason's efforts should be inshrined in the record books, but for whatever reason, they won't be. This was a better game than the scoreboard shows, I can tell you that much."

Next week, maybe the Nelson to Slaughter combination can hook up to lead the Niners to a victory over 1-AA Sam Houston St.

3CowboysL 24-732006 Recap for UNCC
Charlotte, NC- With a winless season looking more and more likely, the UNC Charlotte Forty Niners knew this would be their best oppurtunity of the season to snatch a win from a team. Sadly this was not to happen. But it's due to the players you can count on, or this play did not count on.

We didn't count on star tailback Robert Thompson to get charged with breaking and entering before the game, and is now suspended for 4 more games. We didn't count on Jason Slaughter having a repeat performance of last week, and boy did he with 17 receptions. We didn't count on Senior Gerald Butler taking over for Thompson and running for 94 yards. We didn't count on Fullback Eugene Clark volunteering to play defense, and he led the way with 7 tackles.

It was over at the beginning of the game, and that's what we've come to count on. It all started with Cam Nelson's first two passes being picked off, and, all four of his interceptions came in the first half. He settled down in the second half to make some noise, including a touchdown pass to Slaughter on the game's final play.

Sam Houston St. dominated this one from start to, well, almost finish. The 4th quarter belonged to UNC Charlotte, as they were able to drive down the field twice, the first time resulting in a turnover on downs at the one, and the second one resulting in the final play touchdown pass.

We were unable to find Coach Knotts after the game, but rumors were circulated throughout the locker room that he had locked himself in his office, and was crying. We couldn't blame him, we would cry after that dismal performance.

So we settled for talking to Offensive Coordinator Denny Scott.

"Well, I think that game was.... bull ****. Pardon my language, but I know if we lined up to face them again, we would not only beat them, we would kill them."

Upon hearing this, Sam Houston St. head coach Phil Smith asked for a rematch next year, at Sam Houston St. No word on whether it will happen.

We host Arkansas St. next week, and it is sure to be interesting, most likely for reasons unpleasant to Niner fans.

4IndiansL 14-522006
Charlotte, NC- This is a game that could've been won. If not for a few miscues, this game would be much much closer than the score says. The Forty Niners made a few mistakes that came back to bite them in the butt at the end.

Some of the good things that happened in this game happened early. Cam Nelson connected to Jason Slaughter for an early touchdown to give the Niners their first lead in program history. It was a brief lead, however, as the Indians of Arkansas St. went on a 31-0 run to end the half.

The Niners came out gunning in the seond half, as Nelson again hooked up with Slaughter, this time for big time gains, and not touchdowns. The Nelson to Slaughter combination is looking like it could be deadly once they get some supporting talent.

Slaughter once again cashed in with a great performance, as he grabbed 19 balls for 259 yards and 1 touchdown. He is going to be the first All-American in program history if he can keep producing at this rate.

Gerald Butler was unable to perform up to the way he played last week, as he only ran for 32 yards on 18 carries. He had a key fumble early in the game that basically wiped awau any chance of a Niner victory. But he can't be soley blamed for the fumble, as no one on the offensive line blocked. He had four people around him when he took the handoff resulting in the fumble.

The main reason the Indians won was the fact that WR #3 was unstoppable. He had that next-level speed that the Niners just lack. It made the difference in the game as he scored 4 straight touchdowns during the Indians 31-0 run in the first half.

Coach Tom Knotts, fresh off of a meeting with a psycholagist after his "breakdown" last week, was able to speak to us today.

"Well, that's just one that you want to forget about, we played our hearts out on that field out there, and I hope that those watching were able to notice."

Offensive Coordinator Denny Scott, fresh off of a meeting with an administrator about his swearing last week, was also able to sit down with us after the game.

"We had something going out there with the passing game. If only we could get the running game going, but with [Robert] Thompson suspended, that won't happen for a while."

Next week, we will face off against Tulane, as a program in a rebuilding mode will face off against our, er, "building" Niners.

5TulaneL 10-1042006
New Orleans, LA- During a football game, emotions are supposed to be kept in check. No matter what is going on, you don't let your emotions get in the way of what you are trying to accomplish out there on the football field. That was what Niner Safety Jon Clark should've remembered.

It was late in the 4th quarter, and Tulane had already destroyed UNCC, and was winning 94-10. The Niner defense expected Tulane to run out the clock so as not to run up the score. Tulane passed. It was a 94 yard touchdown pass, and it infuriated the Niners. The sideline was crazy. Jon Clark had kept his emotions bottled up inside him for most of this season, and he finally couldn't take it.

On the extra point try, he tackled the kicker. Not just tackled him, virtually decapitated him. It was a helmet-to-helmet hit, and it resulted in the kicker's helmet landing about 15 yards behind him. This began a riot. Both sidelines cleared, and the field was amiss with players and coaches everywhere. Clark managed to find Tulane's head coach, and was beating his brains out when the New Orleans police force arrived. It took 15 minutes to sort out the madness, and by the time it was over, 6 niners, including Clark, were in the back of squad cars. 5 members of Tulane were also in the back of squad cars.

Tulane head coach Chris Scelfo was on his way to the hospital, where doctors say he suffered a mild concussion, but is expected to recover quickly.

The final two minutes of the game went by without any other disasters.

Gerald Butler finished the game wih 3 fumbles, and the Niners turned the football over 6 times in the game.

After the madness, we were able to find Coach Knotts.

"I'd like to apoligize on behalf of UNCC for the events that took place late in the 4th quarter of today's game. It was completely unneccessary, and I seriously doubt that Jon [Clark] will ever play another college football game."

We phoned the NCAA offices, and they said that they will make a decision on the event in the next month. Jon Clark won't be playing for the next month, however, as Coach Knotts suspended him until the NCAA makes its ruling.

Next week we travel to El Paso as our Niners look to pull the upset over UTEP. Hopefully without any disasters, though.

6MinersL 7-712006
El Paso, TX- Accountability. That is the first thing that Coach Tom Knotts talked to his players about in his first meeting as coach, in April back before the season began. He told the team that they would be responsible for their actions on and off of the field. He even gave the team a reading assignment, a book actually titled "Accountability". Apparently, not many listened, as two players have already violated this rule. Robert Thompson had been suspended for 5 games, and Jon Clark has been suspended indefinately.

Nobody would've thought that Jason Slaughter would be the next to break that rule. Earlier in the week, a wallet had been reported stolen on campus. This very same wallet was found in his locker by a teammate, and Jason was turned in to Coach Knotts. Jason is currently on suspension for 5 games, including this one.

Without their best offensive weapon, the offense sputtered. The passing game, which had been responsible for the whole offense this season, went into a koma-like state without their top-wideout. Although the running game is never top notch, they can usually get a few good runs with Slaughter pulling defenders to the outside. Starting tailback Gerald Butler ran for 21 yards total, and on his best run, of 6 yards, he fumbled.

That was the end of it for him. Coach Knotts, citing a need for speed at tailback, put in his fastest player, senior cornerback Derek Moore. Moore's first carry was a good sign, as he took off for a 12 yard gain, hurtling over, and around defenders. He dominated the second half, and the Niners controlled the ball for 14 of the 16 minutes of the second half.

He provided the only Niner touchdown, as he out leaped UTEP Miner defender Keith White at the corner, and was just able to stretch the ball over the white line.

After the game, we were able to catch up with Coach Knotts.

"Well, it wasn't our best game. But how about Derek out there, playing a position that he's never played before, and excelling at it. But that's just the kind of kid he is, it showed his true character. Real Shame about Jason, he was on pace to set NCAA records."

Next week, our Niners take on Marshall, at home.

7MarshallL 7-1032006
Charlotte, NC- With all of the good feelings around the football program after hearing about the success that Herman P. Sherman was having in recruiting, many expected that this team would begin their turnaround in this game. Boy, were they off.
Turning the program around won't happen today, or this season, for that matter.

The Niners were humiliated by the Marshall Thundering Herd 103-7 today in Charlotte. It was the third time this season that the Niners gave up more than 100 points, and we certainly hope that Sherman has some defensive help coming in, as this was disgusting to watch. I actually watched several of my colleagues lose their lunch.

Normally, we like to highlight the bright spots of the game for the Niners, and talk about how much they meant to the game. There weren't any bright spots today. Cam Nelson was expected to step up and carry the offense, and he failed to do so, as he only completed nine of his 27 pass attempts.

As a team, the Niners finished with -27 total rushing yards. Derek Moore led the way a great total of 11 yards on 8 carries. Gerald Butler finished with -11 yards on 12 carries.

Coach Tom Knotts declined to talk to reporters today, and religated that duty to offensive coordinator Denny Scott.

"Well, these are the games you just like to forget. I don't really think this game showed what type of team we are, as we are capable of much, much better. I just hope that these boys don't get down on themselvs for this loss, it wasn't their fault. We didn't do a good job of preparing them to go out their and win this football game."

Next week the Niners face off against in-state rival Eastern Carolina, and maybe the competitive juices will be flowing so well, that they actually come within 20 points.

8East CarolinaL 7-922006
Greenville, NC- When players are missing from games, it can cause a lot of problems for the team that they are missing from. For the past few weeks, defensive tackle Evan Brooks and tailback Robert Thompson have been missing from the field for different reasons. Brooks because of a concussion, Thompson because of a suspension.

The Niners have missed the way that Brooks was always their man in the middle, occupying blockers, and penetrating. He was playing very good today, as he had a season-high 10 tackles. He also set Niner records with 6 tackles for loss, and 3 sacks.

The running game for the Niners has been very poor in the past several weeks, and it has been due partly to the fact that Thompson wasn't in the backfield. Today was a historic day for him, in terms of UNCC rushing history. He became the first Niner to ever go over 100 rushing yards.

For the second straight week, we saw Cam Nelson dissapoint us, as he threw 5 interceptions. He didn't even break 100 yards passing. Jason Slaughter's abscence has seen his statistics drop, and it is now quite clear how awful Nelson really is.

The Niners, as a team, had a season-high of 5 sacks. Brooks chipped in 3 of them, then Marcus Johnson chipped in 2.

After being beaten savagely by the Eastern Carolina Pirates, our Niners look to rebound next week against UAB.

10Alabama BirminghamL 3-842006
Charlotte, NC- Game after game after game, the Niners limp out of the exit after another savage beating at the hands of a team that is clearly better than them. Today's game against the University of Alabama-Birmingham was not any different that the 8 other games that they have played this season.

For the first time all-season, the Niners defense did not give up a single passing touchdown. That is nothing to be proud of, however, as the UAB Blazers only passed 12 times. They were led by star tailback Ryan Johnson, who ran for 224 yards and 7 touchdowns

Johnson also led the way in recieving, as he had 3 receptions for 15 yards. The next best was 1 reception, and 6 other players achieved that feat.

Moving on to the horrendous Niner defense, it wasn't a good day in the trenches for these guys. Coming off of a career day last week, Evan Brooks managed to eek out 2 tackles, a major nosedive in production from the way he performed earlier.

The linebacking core continued to dissapoint as it had all season long, as they totaled a combined 2 tackles. They are being held largely respondible for the rushing day that UAB had.

The secondary was full of no shining stars as well, as they failed to end a couple of long runs for the Blazers. Bo Ralph, although the team leader in tackles today, was the most common victim of Johnson's great tackle-breaking ability. He couldn't have hit the broad side of a barn with the way he played today.

Now, as if it could get any better, the offense of the Forty Niners was, well, we can't say that without getting fined. Cam Nelson, yes the Nelson that threw five intereceptions last weekend, only completed 5 passes, and only had 59 passing yards, and tacked on 1 interception.

Robert Thompson had quite possibly the worst day ever for a running back. At halftime he had 19 carries for 3 total yards. Things looked up in the second half, but he still only managed 43 yards on 39 carries. It was an embarrassing day for the Niner running game.

The recieving core did horrible as well, a continuing theme in today's game. Time after time, after time, we saw an actually good Nelson pass get dropped by a reciever, with no one around him. Or we saw them fumble after getting a good chunk of yardage.

The offensive line may take the brunt of the blame for the latest embarrassment. Their failure to open holes resulted in Thompson's 43 yard day, and their failure to hold their blocks resulted in Nelson's 59 yard day through the air.

We are hoping that Herman P. Sherman can pull off some good recruiting, as to avoid any future embarrassments.
