2006 Season Preview
Doesn't look good
Well, it's time
for the inaugrial season of UNC Charlotte Forty Ninners Football, and,
as they ready themselves for what appears to be a rough run through the
Conference-USA in their first year, we are here to give you the
run-down on the team. Of course it is a very
optimistic
look into it.
Lining up under
center for us will be Sophomore Cam Nelson. Nelson isn't very
mobile, but he does have the strongest arm on the team, and to go along
with that, the most accurate one on the team. Backing him up
is Nick Robinson, who is a good decision maker. The Niners
will look to shore up this position in recruiting.
In the backfield
we have the speedy Robert Thompson. Quite possibly the most
talented player on the offense, he will be expected to carry the load
this season. Senior Gerald Butler will provide a solid Senior
hand at backup in to spell Thompson. Handling the fullback
duties is Kenny McCoy, and he is quite capable of turning in a good
performance this season. Expect one of the backups to be
redshirted, and the Niners will look to bring in a recruit to handle
the duties.
Now, moving on to
the best position on the offense, the wide receiving core.
Led by playmaker Jason Slaughter, this is a very quick core
indeed. Slaughter will have to come up big for this team to
have success, though. Jake Payne is the #2 option at wideout,
and he provides another quick target. Lining up in the slot
is Jared Todd, the fastest player on the offense, and he will look to
exploit mismatches with Linebackers. At tight end is Zach
Johnson, and he has pretty good spee for at tight end. This
looks to be the best area for the Niners, but there still isn't enough
talent to beat Tommy Knotts' old high school team.
The Offensive
line doesn't look good at all. Ed Casey wil have to anchor
the line from Left Tackle, and Chris Elliot could do good with the
right schemes. Don't look for anything good to come out of
this group, as most of them will ride the bench once we get some good
recruits.
Moving on to the
defensive line. A good nose tackle is always essential in the
3-4 alignment, and the Niners have one. Evan Brooks is the
strongest player on the team, and could have a breakout year.
Herbert Porter has average speed at the end, and so does
Trevor Jenkins. While Brooks is a star in the making, his
supporting cast isn't very good.
The linebackers
appear to be the worst area of the defense. None of them have
good speed. None of them have good strength. None
of them can tackle well. It is going to be a sad sight to see
those passes in the flat turned into touchdown's because of this
group's inability to play the game of football.
The defensive
secondary looks to be the best part of the defense for the Niners.
Derek Moore is a star, and will have to come up with big
plays for this team to survive. Free Safety Jon Clark has
good speed compared to the rest of the team, as does corner Maurice
O'Brien. Strong Safety Bo Ralph will look to patrol the field
with his good instincts and awareness.
As for the
punting and kicking duties, Demetrius Garner will be handling both for
Charlotte. He has a good foot, and with the right coaching,
could become a solid kicker.
Overall, as a
team, they wouldn't win 8 games in high school ball. Maybe
with a little luck, they can catch a horrible team off guard and pull
an upset, next season.
