Sabean steps down, Makridakis named replacement
Posted: 03/20/08

SAN FRANCISCO(AP)- Brian Sabean ended his roller coaster tenure as the San Francisco Giants GM, calling it quits after 11 seasons.

The Sabean led Giants haven't been to the postseason since 2002, when they won the NL Pennant, despite posting winning records in eight of his 12 seasons, . They are coming off of a last place finish in the NL West, the second consecutive season that has happened.

"I would like to thank Brian for everything he has done for the organization and all the hard work he has put in to making this team successful," co-owner Peter Magowan issued in a statement. "As an organization, we felt it was time to change things up a bit and head in a different direction."

Sabean's predecessor was announced soon after, as assistant scouting director Jeffrey Makridakis was named the general manager, and was signed to a 2 year deal.

Makridakis helped build up once one of the league's best farm systems, as he was responsible for the acquisitions and selections of Nate Schierholtz, Dan Ortmeier, Jonathan Sanchez and Kevin Correia.

The farm system has since collapsed as some of Sabean's trades have done their damage on the system, although Sabean built it to its prominence.Makridakis said his main goal is to rebuild the farm system.

"As general manager, I think one of our pressing needs is to improve the farm system to help us build for the future. The young players are the face of this franchise and will determine how far we go."

"I also believe that we need to be frugal with our money and spend it very wisely. We shall get more involved in sabermetrics associated with signings and assign new positions to bring the best possible talent to this organization."

"But my main goal is simply to put together an organization that goes out and competes at every level and is very professional in every aspect of the word."

Makridakis is scheduled for a 6:40 pm flight to head to Arizona for Spring Training, where the Giants have another week left of games.
